A Tradition of Excellence

We are here to pass on to the next generation the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the ‘complete physician’. The very word doctor means teacher; as doctors, we teach our patients, we teach our students, we teach our colleagues, we teach the public, and we must always teach ourselves. We aim to teach our students to marry rigorous scientific knowledge and humane, compassionate care. And we have succeeded. Our graduates are distinguished not only by their exemplary patient care, but also by their remarkable academic achievements.

The dedication of our alumni, alumnae and faculty to outstanding teaching, research and patient care gave rise to the Tufts tradition of excellence and is what continues to carry our reputation forward today. We hope that you are proud to be affiliated with Tufts and that you continue to engage with the Tufts Medicine community and stay in touch with your classmates, mentors, and with us here at TUSM.

Joseph "Skip" Zabilski M'84 on Olympic Team

Dr. Joseph F. “Skip’’ Zabilski, TUSM Class of 1984, an orthopedic surgeon from Plymouth’s Jordan Hospital, is heading to Vancouver tomorrow for the Winter Olympics. Over the next few weeks, he’ll be stationed at the Pacific Coliseum ice arena, nervously watching figure skaters spin, twirl, and leap through the air.

Team USA’s figure skating athletes know him as “Dr. Skip,’’ and Zabilski knows them well. As the team physician for the US Olympic figure skaters, he’ll stand ready on the sidelines, prepared for the worst and on hand to provide whatever the skaters need - whether it’s an ice pack, a bandage, or a few words of encouragement.  Click here to read more

Jerome Kassirer Nominated for Lifetime Achievement Award by British Medical Journal

Less than two months ago, Dr. Jerome Kassirer received the prestigious Rogers Award from the AAMC for "his major contributions to improving the health and health care of the American people." Now Jerry has been nominated by the esteemed British Medical Journal (BMJ) for an international honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

According to BMJ, the Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed upon the "individual who has, over his or her working lifetime, made a unique and substantial contribution to improving health care, whether in clinical practice, health services, public health, health policy, medical education, or medical research."

The BMJ awards outstanding scientists in 11 categories, chosen from over 700 nominees. For the Lifetime Achievement category, the awardee will be selected from among a list of 10 nominees through an online poll. Dr. Kassirer is the only American nominated.

BMJ states that "Jerry Kassirer's career has been dedicated to promoting rationality and integrity in clinical research and medicine. His groundbreaking work on clinical reasoning and decision analysis formed the rational basis of the judgements that physicians now make on a daily basis about the benefits and risks of tests and treatments."
