This spring Tufts University School of Medicine will embark on an exciting renovation of the Arthur M. Sackler Center for Health Communications, one which reflects the spirit of our current campaign, Beyond Boundaries: The Campaign for Tufts. We are building across walls, across scientific and medical disciplines, and across functions to create a place strategically designed to capitalize on our greatest asset: people.
Aiming to transform the building into a modern campus center, the redesigned Sackler Center is configured for the way Tufts learns today, with spaces crafted to enhance our sense of community and to encourage the collaboration and exchange among faculty, students and staff that characterizes Tufts. This reorganization recognizes that great ideas sometimes come after a good workout, insights are often gained over a cup of coffee, and the best learning may not happen in a lecture hall.
Smaller seminar rooms and flexible learning venues will foster Learning Communities, accommodating shifts in instruction style to the more hands-on learning that takes place in small groups and Problem Based Learning teams. Improved student amenities will include a Fitness Center with cardio circuit, free weights and yoga studio; spaces for informal meetings, activities and student associations; and a Café featuring health-conscious and late-night options. The Hirsh Health Sciences Library will remain a vital part of the center, providing quiet study space, computer access and an array of informational resources.
Upon completion of the renovation, significant objectives within the medical school’s strategic plan will be achieved. The newly created campus center will increase TUSM’s visibility in the medical and academic communities, providing a competitive edge in attracting top applicants and serving as the foundation for the development of a distinct campus identity. The creation of accessible, multi-functional conference facilities creates a venue for Tufts to showcase its own intellectual capital and to engage its neighbors in the Boston medical and scientific communities.
Generous support of the Sackler renovation by visionary alumni, faculty and friends is key to our efforts, measurably enhancing the growth and continued success of world-class medical education and interdisciplinary teaching, research and learning at Tufts.
