Beyond Boundaries: the Campaign for Tufts is a university-wide campaign aiming to raise $1.2 billion for student financial aid, endowed professorships, new research facilities, initiatives in citizenship and public service and other priorities. The campaign is off to a great start, already raising more than $750 million.
Within the Beyond Boundaries campaign Tufts University School of Medicine has been challenged to raise $225 million. Resources raised will fulfill our ambitions for TUSM to further distinguish itself as a premier medical school and prepare the next generation of Tufts physicians and scientists as outlined in the school’s strategic plan. Through the successful completion of the Beyond Boundaries campaign, TUSM will continue to be comprised of the finest students, educators and researchers, all willing to serve the global community and help shape the practice of medicine in the decades ahead.
The three major areas of focus for TUSM’s Beyond Boundaries campaign are:
Transforming Medical Education and Enhancing the Environment for Learning and Student Life
- Scholarships and Stipends – A critical tool to help students with the soaring cost of medical education is scholarship. Our goal is to endow 80 half-tuition scholarships so students can pursue medical and biomedical graduate education of Tufts, regardless of their ability to pay.
- Health Sciences Campus Community Presence – The Chinatown campus will finally get its proper recognition and visibility in Boston’s downtown with TUSM banners, signage, lighting, and landscaping to create a distinct campus setting.
- Campus Center – A campus center will be established by renovating the Sackler Center to improve the student experience and foster a greater sense of community. The campus center will feature a cafeteria to encourage faculty and student interaction, a fitness center to provide a needed stress release for our hard working students and faculty, and a large function space available for symposia, ceremonies and other events.
- Medical Skills and Simulation Center – Simulation allows first and second year medical students to acquire clinical skills in preparation for their clerkship and rotations in the third and fourth year. The simulation center will offer state-of-the-art technology such as computerized mannequins and standardize patients and give our faculty cutting-edge instructional equipment.
Developing Distinctive Capabilities in Research
- Science Faculty Recognition and Support – We aim to strengthen support for our distinguished basic science research faculty by funding five full professorships and ten assistant/associate endowed professorships.
- Faculty Recruitment Packages – Recruiting top talent is crucial for the future of TUSM. Recruitment packages include start-up funds, lab renovations and salary support for three to five years.
Strengthening Teaching Hospital Partnerships
- Community Clerkship Directors and TUSM Clinical Department Chairs – TUSM’s clinical education experience is shaped by Clerkship Directors and Clinical Department chairs who take a pivotal role in bringing our students into the hospital to learn at patient bedsides.
- Academic Headquarters at TUSM and Teaching Hospitals – The headquarters will be the central infrastructure to support services for clinical faculty that will manage processes for academic appointments, promotions and faculty development.
- Clinical Research Support – TUSM will coordinate, encourage and support the expansion of clinical research with seed grants and adaption of the Division of Clinical Research Resources.
